Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and School 2718 Overbrook Dr., Raleigh NC 27608 Director of Liturgy and Music Summary of Position The Director of Liturgy and Music at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in the heart of Raleigh, NC, is responsible for a vibrant music program that makes present the musical tradition of the universal church. The Director of Liturgy and Music serves under the supervision of the Pastor, assisting him in the administration of the liturgical life of the parish and school. The Second Vatical Council stated that "every liturgical celebration...is a sacred action surpassing all others," and is both the "source and summit of the Christian life. For this reason, the Director of Liturgy and Music has responsibilities of great significance for the faithful at Our Lady of Lourdes.
The Director of Liturgy and Music is responsible for collaborating with clergy, staff, ministry leaders, volunteers, and musicians to plan and execute parish liturgies and music for the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful. The Director develops and directs liturgical ministers and musicians to provide leadership on Sundays and other special liturgies that will lead parishioners "to that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations called for by the very nature of the liturgy" (Sacrosanctum Concilium #14). The ideal will be a proficient organist with vocal and choral experience, a practicing Catholic in good standing with a love for the sacred liturgy and the traditions of the church. Qualifications
Bachelor or Master’s degree in music preferred
Choral director and organist experience
Knowledge of congregational Proper Antiphons repertory in English (especially for the introit and communion)
Music Engraving Software facility
Active member in good standing of the Roman Catholic Church, living in a manner consistent with Catholic moral principles
Comprehensive understanding of liturgical documents including the GIRM, Sacrosanctum Concilium, Musicam Sacram, and other liturgical texts.
Proficiency in Gregorian chant preferred
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Collaborates with Pastor and staff in implementing the mission of the parish
Works with the Pastor to ensure the musical aspects of parish life contribute to the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful; selects music for the assembly that makes use of the Proper texts whenever possible, either from the Graduale Romanum or the Graduale Simplex.
Assures that quality sacred music is provided for parish and school liturgies. Selects music, recruits and schedules musicians as needed, and directs the music for Sunday liturgies and other significant parish celebrations, particularly:
Weekend Liturgies – Saturday 5PM; Sunday 9AM, Sunday 11:30AM. Sunday 5PM may be covered by another organist, but the Director would be responsible for scheduling this musician and ensuring the quality of the music
Other major liturgies including evening liturgies on Holy Days of Obligation and designated special feast days and solemnities
School Masses, divided with the school organist; assists the music teacher in training the student cantors
When unable to be present, ensures that adequate and capable musicians are available to provide music for these liturgies.
Implements parish-wide catechesis on the liturgy
Develops children and youth choirs, and fosters youth participation.
Assists the pastor in the acquisition of permanent books for liturgical worship (hymnals, missals).
Provides liturgical scripts and binders for special rites as requested by the pastor.
Supervises proper use and maintenance of all musical equipment including the Wicks Pipe Organ, three pianos on campus, handbells, etc, including maintenance and regular tunings.
Supervises proper use of sound system within the church and assists as necessary with audio system use at other events outside the church proper.
Oversees compliance with copyright laws and licensing procedures.
Maintains choir library and liturgical/musical resources as needed.
Ensures accuracy of information posted on the website concerning Liturgy and Music.
Supervises, approves, and provides music for weddings, funerals, and meets with participants to discuss the rites and ensure proper liturgical and musical practices. Pastorally engages those needing assistance in selecting music for these liturgies; given first right of refusal for all weddings and funerals; when unable to be present, ensures that adequate and capable musicians are available to provide music for these liturgies.
Coordinates and approves all non-parish musicians, including guest vocalists and instrumentalists.
Provides catechesis as needed in support of the parish Faith Formation and RCIA programs, including liturgical planning of RCIA rites, Confirmation, First Communions, etc.
Prepares worship aids as needed for liturgical celebrations.
Prepares and administers the music budget as delegated by the Pastor.
Ensures proper copyright permissions, usage fees and licenses have been obtained for all material used in the music program.
Maintains active memberships in professional organizations such as the NPM, CMAA, AGO, ACDA, etc.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is revealed in full splendor when all the parts of the body perform thier roles as is proper to them. This means that we need lay persons to proclaim the word and to support the singing of the congregation through cantoring and in the choir. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are also needed to bring communion to the sick and homebound, as well as reverently distribute communion during Mass.
